BIOGRAPHIES

Mrs Susan Hobbs RGN MSc (Chair)

Sue qualified as a Registered General Nurse at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. Following registration she gained broad clinical experience in medical nursing, critical care, neurosciences and theatre nursing in the United Kingdom and abroad before expanding her career by diversifying into international recruitment and hospital commissioning. Sue was appointed as a general manager at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge in 1983 and in 1988 was appointed as Assistant Unit General Manager and Director of Nursing at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. In 1993 Sue moved into the community sector and was appointed as Director of Professional Practice for the Plymouth Community Services NHS Trust. In 1997 she was appointed as the Chief Nurse for the University of Wales Healthcare NHS Trust in Cardiff. Following two mergers Sue was appointed as Chief Nurse for the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust that came into being on 1 April 2000. Sue was also the Clinical Governance lead for the Trust.

Sue retired from this post in June 2004 to develop her career in other directions. Her current portfolio includes trusteeship for three charitable bodies, working as a Healthcare Management Consultant, as a Non-Executive Director for NHS Professionals Special Health Authority and as an Associate with the Education Committee of the General Medical Council, specifically working on the QA programme for undergraduate medical education. Sue is married, lives in Devon and enjoys sailing.

Ms Sandy Davenport

Brought up in Esher, Surrey and later Hampshire, Sandy later moved to Nice to finish her education at the Alliance Francaise studying French.On her return to England she then started her career in Estate Agency.For the last twenty years, due to a passion for sailing, she has lived in the West Country to be close to the sea, and for the last eleven years has worked for Knight Frank and is a Partner in the firm heading the Waterfront Dept.

Mr John Melo

John was born and brought up in Mozambique (Portuguese East Africa) and later emigrated to South Africa to further his studies.  Whilst there, he met and married Margaret and they had a daughter Catherine, who was born in Cape Town.  The family arrived in the UK in 1978 and they now live in Penn, Buckinghamshire.
In the UK, John has held a number of senior positions in the private sector (in Financial Services, Business/Corporate Services and Travel) as well as in the public sector (central and local government).  Previous roles he has had include Executive and Non-Executive Director, Managing Director (Business Process Outsourcing and Shared Services) and Director of Corporate Change/Transformation, Human Resources, Information Technology, Customer Services and Operations.  He currently provides consultancy and interim management services through his own company.

John was appointed to the Board of Trustees in January 2010.

Professor Stephen Newstead

Steve was born and brought up in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. He was educated at Keble College, Oxford, where he received a Psychology degree, and then at the University of Nottingham where he was awarded a PhD. He spent almost all his career at the University of Plymouth as Lecturer, Head of Department, Professor, Dean, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. He retired from the University at the beginning of 2009.

He has held a number of senior roles in the British Psychological Society, including serving as President from 1995-6. He has also held various (voluntary) positions on the national research councils, the Quality Assurance Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

His teaching and research interests are in two main areas: the psychology of language, thinking and problem solving; and educational psychology, especially student learning and assessment. He has published numerous books, book chapters and journal articles in these areas.

Mr Hwyel Rees

Hywel became a St Loye's trustee in August 2008. He has been Company Secretary of Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK's largest port operator, since 1989. Additionally, he has been Head of Group Personnel at ABP since 1999. Hywel lives in Monmouthshire.

Mr Nigel Smith

Nigel qualified as an accountant in 1975.Between 1970 and 1979 he worked in various finance roles in local authorities in Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds.

Between 1979 and 1987 he worked in the States Treasury in Jersey offering financial services to activities as diverse as currency, airport, tourism and health and social security.

From 1987 until 2007 he worked in various roles in the NHS in Plymouth, including Director of Finance for a NHS Trust. His last post was Head of Financial Management at Derriford Hospital.Whilst at Derriford, he undertook the lead role in the integration of the Royal Navy Medical services into the Hospital.

In addition to being a Trustee for St Loye's, he is also a Trustee with Plymouth Age Concern, serving on the Finance, Support Services and Investment sub committees there.

He lives in Plymouth with my wife Lynne and has two sons aged 23 and 18.

Sam the eldest is in his final year at Medical School. James is taking a gap year before studying economics at university.

He enjoys golf, gardening, reading and current affairs.


Cathy Summers

Cathy is a professional career and business coach and training consultant. Cathy started her career as a personnel officer in retail before joining the Royal Air Force as an Air Traffic Control Officer.

After leaving the RAF, she spent 3 months as a volunteer team leader on a youth development expedition in South America with Raleigh International. On her return, she joined Raleigh’s head office to recruit their adult volunteer expedition staff.

Following this Cathy was a consultant for a company specialising in employee selection and development. She later returned to the expedition world as a programme manager for a small charity running overseas conservation projects, before rejoining management consultancy. 

Cathy then joined the NHS and spent 5 years as a senior manager in workforce and leadership development.

In 2006,  she set up her own business, helping organisations to develop their leaders. Cathy also helps individuals to find or regain their purpose and direction in life and achieve their personal and career goals. Cathy is married, lives near Shaftesbury in Dorset and enjoys playing hockey, outdoor activities and the theatre.

Mr Mike Westerman

Mike is a fundraising consultant, mentor and business advisor, with over 25 years experience working in both the voluntary and corporate sectors, holding executive and director positions. A former chairman of both the Institute of Fundraising and Association of Fundraising Consultants, currently he is an honorary trustee of The Community Foundation in Wales, Sefydliad and St Loye's Foundation. He is also Chair of The Midas Partnership and Hon Sec of the Royal British Legion, Tenby.

He is one of a group of three who created and developed the now international charity Action Aid. Has experience of Chair, CEO, and director roles across a wide field and has gained a wide knowledge of governance procedures. In addition he has organised many major international events including such venues as Clarence House, St James Palace and Sydney Harbour.
