Helen’s Story

After a devastating family loss Helen didn’t think there was much future for her.  Depression began to overtake her and things seemed to go down hill fast.  Finding work was difficult and she just couldn’t seem to find anything that fitted her skills.

Eventually, she met her local DEA who advised her about the work of St Loye’s and that was the day that turned her life around…

We met Helen a few weeks later and after discussions about her past working life and what she wanted for her future, we soon realised that employment in Health and Social Care would be the perfect fit.  Helen had spent many years looking after people and really enjoyed the feeling it gave her and she thought it would be wonderful to be able to do something that made you feel that good for a living.

Helen joined St Loye’s and was put on work experience at a Care Home in Exeter, which was a long way from her home in Irvine, Scotland.  This was a major event for Helen as she had never travelled or stayed anywhere on her own before.  The fact that she was met by wonderful trainers and support staff only boosted her resolve to do well.  Becoming independent and finding a career path that seemed to work enabled Helen to start to beat her depression and see the future brighter.

At the half way stage of her course, Helen is progressing well and loves working in the health care profession.  She feels that once she has finished it won’t be long before she is employed.  In fact her DEA has said there are people lined up to offer her work.

Helen’s world is now unbelievably different from that of a year ago and the help that St Loye’s has given her to achieve independence has been truly worthwhile.
